Identify the actual product
Use invoices, packaging, manufacturer documents, warranty records, and qualified observation. Record product line, color, profile, installed date if documented, and known roof areas. Do not infer manufacturer, age, warranty, or remaining life from a distant photograph.
Match the installation details
Ask which manufacturer instructions govern slope, deck, underlayment, starter, fastening, ridge or hip, valleys, ventilation, and flashing integration. The proposal should name components and quantities rather than only say premium shingles. A product upgrade does not repair an unresolved deck or water-path problem.
Understand matching limits
For a repair, discuss color weathering, profile, size, seal behavior, brittleness, and adjacent removal. A new piece may not visually match an older roof even when technically suitable. Record that expectation and the repair boundary before work.
Retain the concealed record
Photograph deck work, underlayment, edges, flashings, and attachment before covering when the contractor can do so safely. Keep product labels, delivery records, weather, permit and inspection information, and warranty documents. A finished roof photograph cannot show all those layers.
Call about the roof
Have the address, safe ground or interior observations, event timing, access contact, and any roof or permit record nearby. The call may connect you with an independent provider. Confirm who answered, Madison coverage, service fit, credentials, insurance, availability, price, permit responsibility, and contract terms.
