Map openings and boundaries
From qualified observation and safe interior access, record soffit or other intake, ridge or other exhaust, gable openings, baffles, blocked paths, attic compartments, cathedral areas, additions, and roof levels. Do not assume visible exterior vents connect to every concealed space.
Add moisture and operation context
Include attic frost or staining, indoor humidity readings when available, bath and kitchen exhaust routes, combustion or mechanical equipment, insulation work, air-sealing reports, and seasonal patterns. A roofer may need coordination with building-envelope and mechanical specialists.
Ask for a design basis
Request calculations or manufacturer and code basis appropriate to the actual building, plus intake and exhaust balance, net free area information, weather protection, insect screening, snow or debris considerations, and interaction with the roof warranty. Do not select components by appearance alone.
Test the complete handoff
Record roof penetrations, baffles, insulation clearances, duct corrections, air-sealing work, and post-work observation. Keep the next winter or humid-season check in the file. A dry visit immediately after work cannot confirm every seasonal condition.
Call about the roof
Have the address, safe ground or interior observations, event timing, access contact, and any roof or permit record nearby. The call may connect you with an independent provider. Confirm who answered, Madison coverage, service fit, credentials, insurance, availability, price, permit responsibility, and contract terms.
