Watch the pattern without approaching the roof or falling-ice zone

Snow, ice, frost, thaw, and interior marks can provide evidence, but winter access and removal carry serious hazards.

Stay at a safe distance

Observe roof faces from protected ground or a window. Avoid eaves, loaded gutters, icicles, roof edges, snow slides, ladders, and damaged ceilings. If unusual sagging, cracking, a collapse concern, electrical contact, or immediate danger appears, keep people clear and use the proper emergency or building channel.

Record distribution and timing

Note where snow remains, melts early, drifts, or accumulates unevenly, along with roof orientation, shaded areas, nearby equipment, temperature changes, and precipitation dates. Photographs should have the same viewpoint when possible. Distribution is a clue for qualified evaluation, not a measurement of structural capacity.

Connect interior evidence

Record new stains, dripping, frost visible from safe attic access, humidity changes, and mechanical activity. Do not enter un-floored or unsafe attic areas or disturb insulation. Roof entry, condensation, plumbing, and other sources can overlap, so the timeline should remain open to several explanations.

Separate response from prevention

A qualified party may address immediate ice, snow, water, or hazard control. A later clear-weather review can examine roof details, drainage, insulation, air leakage, ventilation, and equipment. Keep those scopes distinct so temporary relief is not mistaken for a complete preventive correction.

Call about the roof

Have the address, safe ground or interior observations, event timing, access contact, and any roof or permit record nearby. The call may connect you with an independent provider. Confirm who answered, Madison coverage, service fit, credentials, insurance, availability, price, permit responsibility, and contract terms.
