Record the event safely
Save date, time, official warning or weather report used, photographs taken from shelter, and safely reachable ground debris after danger passes. Do not go outside during hail or climb to inspect the roof afterward. A hail-size estimate should state how it was observed rather than appear as a measured fact.
Separate materials and locations
Photograph gutters, siding, trim, screens, vehicles, outdoor objects, and roof faces from ground level where safe. Label each location. Marks on one material do not prove damage to another, and a roof may show wear, installation effects, prior repairs, or other causes that need professional distinction.
Request a location-based report
Ask the inspector to identify each roof face, material, observed mark, test or method, inaccessible area, and basis for any cause opinion. Keep photographs with their captions. A few close-ups without roof location are hard to use in a repair scope or claim discussion.
Keep insurer decisions separate
Notify the insurer according to the policy when a claim is considered and preserve receipts and communications. The roofing provider supplies observations and a work proposal; the insurer decides coverage under the actual policy. Do not sign an unclear contingency or completion document because a salesperson predicts payment.
Call about the roof
Have the address, safe ground or interior observations, event timing, access contact, and any roof or permit record nearby. The call may connect you with an independent provider. Confirm who answered, Madison coverage, service fit, credentials, insurance, availability, price, permit responsibility, and contract terms.
