Notify and document through the policy
Wisconsin OCI advises prompt insurer notice after a storm, photographs, a damage inventory, receipts, and coordination before disposal. Follow the actual policy and claim instructions. Record claim contacts, dates, reference numbers, and documents without publishing sensitive information.
Keep findings attributable
Label what the owner observed, what the roofer reported, what an engineer or other specialist found, and what the adjuster or insurer decided. Use exact dates and roof locations. Do not rewrite suspected cause as confirmed or one party estimate as a coverage decision.
Separate emergency and permanent work
Save temporary protection authorization, area, method, photographs, receipts, monitoring, and limitation apart from the permanent proposal. Ask the insurer about its procedure while taking reasonable safety action. A contractor should not be presented as negotiating or guaranteeing the claim.
Reconcile the final file
Keep estimates, scopes, insurer communications, permits, credentials, contracts, approved changes, invoices, product records, inspections, warranties, payment and lien documents, and unresolved differences. Coverage, depreciation, matching, and payment questions belong to the policy and insurer, not this referral guide.
Call about the roof
Have the address, safe ground or interior observations, event timing, access contact, and any roof or permit record nearby. The call may connect you with an independent provider. Confirm who answered, Madison coverage, service fit, credentials, insurance, availability, price, permit responsibility, and contract terms.
